A Short History of Bissell

Now that you’ve seen some of the vacuum cleaners of the Bissell brand let’s look into their origin a little bit to get more insight.
Bissell started in 1876 as a family-owned company. It’s been a glorious business for more than five generations. The company takes pride in continually researching people’s needs. But when, why, by whom and how did it all start?
Homes have been spotless since 1876, thanks to Bissell. That’s 144 years of dust-free homes! This makes them very experienced and trustworthy when it comes to buying their products. They’re very invested in putting out the best products for you.
The founders, Melville and Anna Bissell initially worked in a crockery shop. They were the owners of the shop. And as one can imagine, a shop like that has a lot of dust particles everywhere, as well as daily breakages.
Melville then decided to invent the carpet-sweeping machine. He wanted the store to be clean and neat throughout the day. This sweeping machine worked. It worked so well that the word about its existence quickly spread across town. The demand for these sweepers began to rise. So much so, that the shop started selling th carpet sweepers more than the crockery. Sometimes, the Bissell family sold more than 1000 carpet sweepers per day!
By Whom:
Unfortunately, Melville died a few years later, so his wife Anna had to step in and take over the business. She amazingly became the first-ever female CEO in the United States of America. She had to fight to keep the patents for their invention, and she started selling the product all over North America and Europe. Wonderfully, Queen Victoria also made use of these sweepers in the 1980s. The surname Bissell began to be used as a verb in everyday language, which is quite remarkable: “The Royal palaces needed to be Bisselled once a week.”
The next big thing was in 1956: the manual carpet shampooer. So, people didn’t have to scrub their carpets on all fours anymore. Bissell also thought of making it possible to clean all kinds of flooring with a lot less effort.
Hence, they invented a combination of a Vacuum cleaner and a floor scrubber, or a Vac/Floor Scrubber. They also introduced Dry Powder Rug Shampoo and an Applicator to help apply the powder. And lastly, by the late 1960s, they also came forward with the Gemini Sweeper, which was the first of its kind. It had a 2-brush sweeper.
Now, let’s look at a few years later:
Following those marvellous inventions, the first Bissell deep carpet cleaning machine was created in 1979. The machines became more and more complicated yet effective as the years went on. Cleaning carpets were now much more convenient than in previous years.
Then, in 1990, the first Bissell upright vacuum cleaner was introduced. Hooray! Much later, the Bissell family company introduced the first ever portable vacuum cleaner that’s designed explicitly for deep-cleaning pet hair. It’s called the SpotBot.
Bissell, under the leadership of Cathy Bissell, is still supporting pet charities today, and she also founded the Bissell Pet Foundation, which is a non-profit organization for neglected or abused animals. Bissell is there to help everyone, including pets!
