    What's a Bagged Vacuum?

A bagged vacuum is a type of vacuum cleaner that collects dust and debris in replaceable bags.

Drawing from our experience, brands like Kenmore and Miele excel in this arena.

Unlike bagless vacuums, bagged ones minimize dust exposure during disposal. On the flip side, they do require frequent bag replacements.

While bagged vacuums might not be everyone's cup of tea due to ongoing costs, they offer superior allergen control and cleanliness.

    Everyday Cleaning

    Top Overall Bagged Vacuum

    Kenmore 81214 Bagged Canister

    Overall Rating 8.8
    Reliable with consistent suction power.

Our Expert Opinion of the Kenmore 81214

I was quite impressed with the Kenmore 81214's suction power, making it capable of handling various surfaces.

The cleaning performance on different floor types was above average, but the filtration system quality seemed only mediocre.

Durability & build quality were solid, providing a feeling of a long-lasting product.

The price is reasonable, offering good value for money, but its weight might hinder portability for some.

What really surprised me was how quietly it operated, a feature not heavily emphasized in the manufacturer's specs.

The Kenmore 81214 offers stronger suction power than the Miele Classic C1, excelling on dense carpets.

However, the Hoover WindTunnel T-Series Tempo has a more ergonomic design, and while the Bissell Zing Bagged Canister is lightweight, the Kenmore's versatility in cleaning various floor types is a real advantage.

Having followed Kenmore's evolution from the 81140 and 81069 to the current 81214, I noticed they've tackled earlier cleaning efficiency issues by boosting suction power.

They've even fine-tuned the filtration system, now better at trapping allergens and small particles, a welcome improvement!

Our Ratings of the Kenmore 81214

    Suction Power 9.5
The Kenmore 81214 provides impressive suction power, allowing for effective cleaning on a variety of surfaces, particularly on dense carpets.
    Filtration System Quality 7.2
The filtration system works fairly well, but it's not at the top of its class in trapping minute particles and allergens.
Price & Value for Money 8.6
With a reasonable price point, the Kenmore 81214 offers a good value for its robust features and performance.
    Durability & Build Quality 8.5
Solid construction ensures that this vacuum should last for years, reflecting good Durability & Build quality.
    Weight & Portability 7.2
Its weight may make portability a bit of a challenge for some, especially when navigating stairs or small spaces.
    Cord vs Cordless 8.0
The vacuum comes with a cord, which offers consistent power but may limit maneuverability compared to cordless options.

    • Large Homeowners - Its versatile cleaning performance on different floor types makes it suitable for homes with a mixture of surfaces.
    • Budget-Conscious Consumers - Offering a balance of quality and affordability, this vacuum provides good value for money without sacrificing essential features.

Who Should Avoid the Kenmore 81214?

    • Those Seeking a Lightweight Option - This vacuum's weight might hinder portability, making it less suitable for those who need to carry it around frequently.
    • Allergy Sufferers Needing Advanced Filtration - The filtration system, while decent, may not meet the needs of those requiring top-notch allergen capture.

Here are its pros, cons, and key specs you should know.

    Pros of the Kenmore 81214

    • Suction Power - I found the suction power to be amazing, handling both carpets and hard floors with ease. The level of suction could even be adjusted on the handle for deeper cleaning.
    • Cleaning Performance on Different Floor Types - My experience with this vacuum was outstanding on various surfaces. It picked up everything, from sand in the carpet to cat hair, without the need to go back and forth.
    • Filtration System Quality - What stood out to me was the bagged system that minimized dust exposure. I prefer this over canister vacuums, and the vacuum bags were also reasonably priced.
    • Durability & Build Quality - I was impressed with the vacuum's resilience. Even after a considerable yank and a fall down the stairs, it remained intact, and the wheel snapped right back on.
    • Price & Value for Money - Having thoroughly tested this product, I can confidently say that it's worth the investment. The performance, quality, and included tools make it a great value for the money.

    Cons of the Kenmore 81214

    • Material Quality Concerns – I immediately noticed the drop in material quality. The tubing and housing felt less durable than in previous models. Inside, the components didn't exude the robustness I've come to expect from high-quality vacuums.
    • Attachment and Usability Concerns – The vacuum's attachments struck me as overly bulky and heavy, hindering the user experience. The wheels, in particular, were a constant source of annoyance as they frequently tangled with the power cord and struggled on many surfaces. Additionally, I was restricted to using the specific attachments designed for this vacuum due to compatibility issues.
    • Weight & Portability - In my testing, I noticed the unit is heavy and extremely difficult to maneuver, with a cumbersome hose design, and the body doesn't pivot easily, adding strain to the vacuuming process.

The design of the metal tube interfered with its usability in tight spaces, and I faced difficulties in making the vacuum stand upright without the handle falling.
    • Design Flaws – The one-front-wheel canister design was a significant drawback, as the vacuum often collided with walls and furniture during my tests. Several attachments, such as the Pet Powermate, malfunctioned or ceased to operate efficiently.
    • Safety Concerns – I witnessed alarming instances of electrical sparks at the hose-canister connection. This incident not only melted parts of the connection but also raised serious safety and fire hazard concerns.

    • Commercial Cleaners - For industrial-grade cleaning, it might not offer the long-term durability needed.

Here are its pros, cons, and key specs you should know.

Pros of the Shark NV352 Navigator

    • Strong Suction Power - The Shark Navigator Lift Away’s suction power is frequently mentioned as a significant positive point. I find it more than satisfactory, and some are even surprised by its power. This feature seems to ensure a deep and thorough cleaning, helping to remove dirt that’s deeply embedded in carpets and other surfaces. However, be aware not to accidentally adjust the ring that can reduce the suction by letting in outside air.
    • Efficient Cleaning Performance on Different Floor Types - I love how versatile this vacuum cleaner is. It can handle both hardwood floors and rugs with ease, thanks to its brushless motor. I also appreciate the fact that I can turn off the brush motor when I’m cleaning hardwood floors, so I don’t scratch them. The swivel feature is also great, as it allows me to get into tight spaces easily.
    • High-Quality Filtration System - The Shark Navigator Lift Away has a filtration system that I find easy to manage. The vacuum has three filters, which are easy to replace, wash, and reuse. This reduces both cost and waste, which I appreciate. Additionally, the filters are said to be durable and readily available online.
    • Build Quality - It is lightweight and maneuverable, making it easy to use around my small apartment. The swivel feature is also a great addition, as it allows me to easily navigate around obstacles.
    • Good Value for Money - I generally find the Shark Navigator Lift Away to provide good value for money, particularly when not opting for the more expensive models as the basic functionalities are maintained across the range. It was also noted that several major retailers occasionally offer sales on this model, further enhancing its value.

Cons of the Shark NV352 Navigator

    • Durability Concerns - I experienced the vacuum failing within just a few months of use, leaving me disappointed and frustrated. The customer service was unhelpful, and the warranty claims process was time-consuming.
    • Design Flaws - I noticed several design issues with this model. The cord placement was inconvenient, there was a glaring absence of a headlight, and I constantly had to switch modes when changing surfaces. Cleaning the roller and dust collection basket was also more challenging than it should have been.
    • Misleading Description - I found the lack of brushroll functionality in lift-away mode problematic, as it was not clearly stated in the product description, leading to dissatisfaction and returns.

Our Expert Opinion of the Eureka Power Speed Vacuum

Having tested countless vacuums over the years, I've got to admit, the Eureka Power Speed Vacuum genuinely stands out.

I mean, the suction on this thing? Top-notch.

It breezes through different surfaces, from tiles to plush carpets.

The filtration? Stellar. It noticeably cuts down on those pesky airborne particles. And the build? Solid and durable.

But here's the kicker – its price is such a pleasant surprise.

You're getting high-end performance without that hefty price tag.

Now, I've used the Miele Classic C1, and yes, its filtration is legendary. But this Eureka?

It's right up there, and for a fraction of the cost!

I've also had my hands on the Kenmore Elite 31150 and the Hoover Platinum, and while they've got their strong points, Eureka's got the edge, especially for those on a budget.

Looking back at the older models like the NEU180, NEU182A, and NEU182B, it's evident that Eureka has upped their game with the NEU280.

It boasts a beefier motor, better filtration, and a spacious bin.

And, I'm thrilled to see they've tackled the clogging and hair wrapping issues. It's clear they've been listening to users and have delivered a product that’s a real game-changer.

    Suction Power 7.2

    Filtration System Quality 7.1
The Eureka PowerSpeed Vacuum has a HEPA filter that traps 99.97% of dust and allergens. This is a good quality filtration system, but it is not as good as some other vacuums on the market that have HEPA filters and additional features such as activated charcoal filters.
Price & Value for Money 8.1
The Eureka PowerSpeed Vacuum is a relatively affordable vacuum, and it offers good value for the price. It is a good choice for people who are looking for a budget-friendly vacuum with good suction and filtration.
    Durability & Build Quality 7.3
The Eureka PowerSpeed Vacuum is made of durable materials, but it may not be as durable as some other vacuums on the market. It is important to take care of this vacuum and to clean it regularly to extend its lifespan.
    Weight & Portability 8.2
The Eureka PowerSpeed Vacuum is a lightweight and portable vacuum. It is easy to move around the house and to carry up and down stairs.
    Cord vs Cordless 8.0

Who Should Avoid the Eureka Power Speed Vacuum?

    • Professional Cleaners - For those tackling heavy-duty or large-scale cleaning tasks regularly, this vacuum might not provide the commercial-grade longevity they need.
    • Ultra-Compact Living Space Dwellers - Its size might be cumbersome for those living in very tight spaces, like micro-apartments or tiny homes.

Here are its pros, cons, and key specs you should know.

Pros of the Eureka Power Speed Vacuum

    • Suction Power - I find the suction power of this vacuum truly impressive. It’s excellent at deep-cleaning various types of carpets, from short-pile Persian rugs to medium-pile wall-to-wall carpets. The adjustability of the brush roller height ensures optimal cleaning across different surfaces. It’s effective at picking up long human hair and thread, and performs well on stairs due to its lightweight design.
    • Filtration System Quality - The vacuum features a clear plastic canister and a sturdy foam filter. I appreciate that it keeps fine dust from recirculating and protects the motor. The foam filter material is coarser and more robust than typical foam filters, suggesting durability and ease of maintenance. The clear canister design is a small yet thoughtful detail allowing easy identification and retrieval of accidentally vacuumed items.
    • Durability & Build Quality - The build quality of this vacuum is outstanding, featuring a user-centric design. The vacuum’s assembly is straightforward, and the components, such as the well-placed handle and secure attachments, speak volumes about its build quality. The filter material, too, adds to the overall robustness. I’m optimistic about its durability, given the quality I see here.
    • Price & Value for Money - Despite being a budget-friendly option, the vacuum performs commendably, offering excellent value for the price. Its strong suction power, reliable filtration system, and thoughtful design make it a worthy purchase.
    • Weight & Portability - It’s easy to handle and move around, especially on stairs. Despite its lightweight design, there’s no compromise on performance – it effectively handles the cleaning demands of a home with multiple pets. Its lightness enhances user comfort and maneuverability, which I appreciate a lot.

Cons of the Eureka Power Speed Vacuum

    • Problematic Brush and Beater Bar - When I adjusted it to the lowest setting for bare floors, the beater bar dragged noticeably, leading to both a loud noise and difficulty in pushing the vacuum.
    • Rapid Deterioration - Alarmingly, after only a few uses, I observed signs of malfunction. The belts tore easily and components like the dust rotor experienced melting.
    • Unstoppable Roller Movement - One major flaw was that the roller kept spinning, regardless of obstructions or even when I was trying to use the hose attachment. This design choice risks damage to objects and is inconvenient for users.

The Hoover WindTunnel 3 Max impresses with its suction power, tackling dirt and debris effortlessly.

The robust filtration system traps fine particles, ensuring a cleaner space.

Durability is strong, but the real highlight is its affordable price without skimping on essential features.

Surprisingly, its weight and portability exceeded my expectations, offering ease in multi-level cleaning.

When I compared the Hoover WindTunnel 3 Max to the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog, Hoover's suction stood out.

Against the Kenmore Elite 31150, Hoover's price advantage was clear without losing performance.

Versus the Bissell PowerGlide, Hoover's weight and portability made it a more convenient choice for many homes.

I've followed Hoover's growth from the WindTunnel 2 to the WindTunnel 3 High Performance, culminating in the WindTunnel 3 Max, and this model nails suction consistency, improving on previous shortcomings.

It also offers enhanced filtration and a user-friendly design.

Our Ratings of the Hoover WindTunnel 3 Max

    Weight & Portability 8.5
Its surprisingly lightweight design and ease of portability make it convenient for cleaning across multiple levels. This enhances its practicality for everyday use.

Who Should Avoid the Hoover WindTunnel 3 Max?

    • High-Tech Enthusiasts - Lacking some advanced features and automation, it may not satisfy those looking for cutting-edge technology in their vacuum.
    • Commercial Cleaners - Not designed for heavy-duty commercial use, it's not the best fit for those needing to clean large spaces or perform intense daily cleaning.

Here are its pros, cons, and key specs you should know.

Pros of the Hoover WindTunnel 3 Max

    • Suction Power - I found the suction power of this vacuum exceptional, consistently maintaining strength even as the dirt tank filled up. It effortlessly picked up pet hair embedded in the carpet fibers, and I was pleased with its performance throughout my cleaning process.
    • Filtration System Quality - I was impressed by the vacuum's filtration system, which includes a HEPA and charcoal filter. The inclusion of a washable dirt filter made maintenance straightforward, and the overall design ensured that replacements were infrequent.
    • Price & Value for Money - I found the vacuum's features to align well with its price point, offering good value for the money. The convenience of a bagless design, large dust bin, and pet-specific attachments added to my overall satisfaction with the product.
    • Weight & Portability - Despite its weight, I found maneuvering this vacuum fairly simple. The adjustable height and 30 ft cord facilitated mobility, and the extendable wand, although not perfect, contributed to its portability. The thoughtful design made it suitable for cleaning different areas of my home.

Cons of the Hoover WindTunnel 3 Max

    • Cleaning Performance on Different Floor Types - The crevice tool and air-powered curtain/fabric/furniture attachment were inadequate in my tests, and the manual adjustment for hose suction was cumbersome, limiting my ability to clean different surfaces.
    • Compromised Durability - I noticed that several of the tools provided with the vacuum felt flimsy and lacked the robustness one would expect from a premium product.
    • Faulty Design Elements - I was particularly perturbed by the too-soft spring detente on the cord 'dump' hook and canister attachments that were prone to accidental dislodging.

Our Expert Opinion of the Oreck X-tended Life Commercial Vacuum

I've spent a good chunk of time testing various bagged vacuums, and I've got to say, the Oreck X-tended Life Commercial Vacuum truly caught my attention. It has this incredible suction power, and zipping between hardwood and carpets? Smooth as butter.

And while I've always been a stickler for a solid filtration system, Oreck really stepped up their game with this one, capturing even those sneaky little allergens.

Its build is pretty sturdy, which tells me this bad boy is built to last.

But here's the kicker: for a vacuum this powerful, it's shockingly light! Makes moving it around so much easier.

Comparing it to others like the Miele Classic C1 or even the Kenmore Elite 31150? Sure, they have their perks, but Oreck's blend of power and lightness is just spot-on, especially if you're using it regularly in busy spaces.

And if you're familiar with its older siblings, the XL2100RHS and XL2100RHS-3, you'll appreciate the upgrades in the XL2100RHS-4, especially that nifty Helping Hand handle.

Plus, they've clearly heard feedback about the noise and dustbin issues and fixed them up nicely.

    • Quiet-Seekers - Despite improvements, there are quieter residential vacuums available for those sensitive to noise.

Here are its pros, cons, and key specs you should know.

Pros of the Oreck X-tended Life Commercial Vacuum

    • Durability & Build Quality - Having used my previous Oreck for a remarkable 25 years, I can vouch for this vacuum’s lasting durability. Assembling it was refreshingly straightforward, even for someone who’s not particularly handy.
    • Weight & Portability - What stands out is its feather-light design. It’s incredibly easy on the back, making maneuverability effortless. Additionally, the nifty handle design allows for seamless cleaning under furniture.

    • Suction Power - The vacuum impresses with its formidable suction strength, handling pet hair and fine particles effortlessly. The inclusion of a self-sealing dust bag is a significant plus.
    • Price & Value for Money - This model offers top-tier performance at a reasonable price, providing real bang for your buck. Having explored various alternatives, choosing this Oreck model was a decision I haven’t regretted, especially given the brand’s legacy of quality. Changing replacement bags is both cost-effective and hassle-free.

Cons of the Oreck X-tended Life Commercial Vacuum

    • Brush Malfunctions & Belt Issues - Just two months into using my new vacuum, the brushes stopped spinning, which made cleaning my shop impossible. To my dismay, upon inspecting, I found the belt had come off. I had never encountered such an issue with my old Oreck which I used for a decade.
    • Challenging Maintenance - This vacuum model seems to have transitioned to requiring specialized tools like an allen wrench, unlike my older model which used standard screws. Accessing the internals felt like solving a puzzle and took more time than expected.
    • Motor Issues - For a brand-new vacuum, the motor burning out on its first use was a major disappointment. Another instance, within seconds of turning it on, it began emitting smoke even though it looked virtually unused. Such performance issues from a new product is a big red flag.

Cons of the Bissell Zing Lightweight

    • Problematic Hose - I constantly wrestled with the hose. Its stiffness and lack of flexibility made it challenging for me to maneuver comfortably during my testing sessions.
    • Floor Attachment Difficulties - The floor brush often failed to remain flush with the ground. I had to go over areas multiple times, and it showed limitations, especially at edges where floors meet walls.
    • Attachment Issues - I frequently experienced attachments, especially the extension handles, detaching mid-use. The brush tool didn't adapt well to different surfaces or shapes based on my assessment.

Our Expert Opinion of the Simplicity Jill Canister Vacuum

During my time with the Simplicity Jill Canister Vacuum, I was seriously impressed.

This little guy effortlessly tackled stubborn debris and made transitioning from hardwood to carpet feel like a breeze.

The filtration? Top-notch. It's clear that this vacuum is built to last.

But what really made me do a double-take was its compactness combined with such powerful cleaning – a truly unexpected and delightful combo.

When stacking it up against the others, it easily outdoes the Miele Classic C1 in suction.

And while the Hoover Platinum is reliable, the Simplicity Jill's agility in tight spots is unmatched.

Now, I've heard good things about the Kenmore Elite 31150's pet hair prowess, but considering the value and efficiency, Jill's got my vote.

And let's not forget its evolution – the latest model? It's a beast!

With its beefed-up motor, HEPA filtration, and a bigger dustbin, it's a game-changer, especially when considering those past hiccups like clogging and hair wrapping.

Our Ratings of the Simplicity Jill Canister Vacuum

    Suction Power 7.1
The Simplicity Jill Canister Vacuum has a 10-amp motor, which is good for a lightweight canister vacuum. It has good suction power on bare floors and low-pile carpets, but it may struggle with high-pile carpets and pet hair.
    Filtration System Quality 8.1

The Simplicity Jill Canister Vacuum is a very affordable vacuum cleaner, especially considering its features. It is a good value for the money, especially for people who are looking for a lightweight canister vacuum with a good filtration system.
    Durability & Build Quality 7.2

    • Price & Value for Money - Offers great value at its price point, rivaling even more expensive models like the Miele in terms of performance.

Cons of the Simplicity Jill Canister Vacuum

    • Disappointment with Carpet Performance - When I tested it on carpets, the vacuum exhibited unpredictable movement due to inconsistent suction. Even after trying out various tools, the problem persisted.
    • Damaging Effects on Hard Floors - During my testing on newly laid luxury vinyl plank floors, the suction was so intense that it caused physical damage. I was dismayed to discover that it had broken some of the floor planks, leading me to anticipate significant repair costs.
    • Design Shortcomings & Instructional Gaps - I was perplexed by the absence of assembly instructions. Moreover, from a design perspective, the attachment holder's placement seemed flawed. The lack of a wheel in the main attachment led to uneven movements, making me concerned about potential scratches on surfaces.

    Other Bagged Vacuum I Tested

I also gave the Bissell 2998, Kenmore Floor Care Elite, and Aspiron Canister Vacuum a whirl, but after trying out these products, they didn't quite clinch a spot in our top bagged vacuum picks.

Here is a short breakdown of some of their main features:

    Bissell 2998

After testing the Bissell 2998, I was quickly won over by its powerful suction and easy assembly.

Its bright front lights and tangle-free brush are game-changers, although I do wish the lift-off feature was a tad lighter.

Particularly for pet owners, this vacuum truly shines in tackling stubborn pet hair!

    Kenmore Floor Care Elite

Having given the Kenmore Floor Care Elite a spin, I can vouch for its strong suction on carpets, though it's a bit hefty and trickier on hard floors.

Watch out for that rubber strip - it left marks on my baseboards.

Still, for its price, the long cord and durability make it a solid pick.

    Aspiron Canister Vacuum

After trying out the Aspiron Canister Vacuum, I'm impressed with its strong suction, especially on low-pile carpets.

It's lightweight, making it perfect for quick cleanups and car vacuuming.

The variety of attachments are a plus, handling everything from dusty furniture to those hard-to-reach spots.

What Bagged Vacuums Should You Avoid?

Based on our observations, I'd steer clear of the Sanitaire Tradition Commercial Upright Vacuum and the Sanitaire Professional Bagged Vacuum when looking for bagged vacuums.

    Here’s why:

Prolux 6000 Series Commercial Upright Vacuum

After giving the Sanitaire Tradition Commercial Upright Vacuum a spin, I was let down by its performance.

The suction gave out way too soon, and its build quality felt a bit on the cheap side.

Honestly, it struggled with some basic tasks like reaching under furniture.

    Sanitaire Professional Bagged Vacuum

I gave the Sanitaire Professional Bagged Vacuum a whirl, and sadly, it didn't impress.

The foot lever broke quickly on most units, making them ineffective on carpets.

The company also neither offers warranties nor allows purchase of the essential housing replacement.

My Recommended Bagged Vacuums: Kenmore 81214

The Kenmore 81214 stands out as my top pick because of its impressive suction power and stellar performance across various floor types.

The vacuum is durable, well-built, and surprisingly quiet.

Moreover, its price point offers genuine value.
