Vacuums for allergies are cleaning powerhouses.

They're available as upright, canister, stick, or handheld models.

Notable brands like Dyson, Miele, and Shark engineer these machines.

They can also use High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, which unlike regular vacuums, trap tiny allergens.

Drawing from experience, they're a boon for allergy sufferers, providing a cleaner living environment.

However, they can be pricier and require regular filter changes, which are minor trade-offs for their superior performance.

Who Should Avoid the Dyson V11 Outsize Cordless?

    • Budget-Conscious Buyers - This vacuum's premium features come with a higher price tag, which may not be ideal for those on a tight budget.
    • Small Apartment Dwellers - Given its large size, it may be less practical and harder to store in compact living spaces.

Here are its pros, cons, and key specs you should know.

Pros of the Dyson V11 Outsize Cordless

    • Exceptional Suction Power and Cleaning Performance - In my hands-on testing of the Dyson V11 Cordless Vacuum, I experienced extraordinary suction power that effortlessly lifted dust, dirt, and debris from various surfaces. It performed outstandingly on all floor types, be it carpets, rugs, hardwood floors, or tiles, leaving no trace of dirt behind. This efficient cleaning process dramatically improved my cleaning sessions.
    • Filtration System Quality and Cleaning Efficiency - I noticed a significant improvement in my home's air quality, thanks to the V11's powerful suction and high-quality filtration system. After just the first cleaning session, the vacuum collected an enormous amount of dust, visibly reducing my allergy symptoms. The entire cleaning process was efficient, with user-friendly attachments that allowed me to clean my entire apartment thoroughly in less than 45 minutes.
    • Durability, Build Quality, and Attachments - Being a long-time Dyson user, I can testify to the brand's enduring build quality. The Dyson V11 continues this tradition with excellent build quality promising long-term use. I found the ability to clean the roller easily particularly beneficial for long hair - a practical design feature. The range of attachment heads that came with the vacuum added to its versatility, broadening its range of applications.
    • Extended Battery Life and Ease of Charging - In my experience with the Dyson V11, the extended battery life was a game-changer. With one charge, I could clean my entire apartment with time to spare, effectively making my cleaning sessions uninterrupted and more efficient. The installation of the wall-mounted charging station was straightforward, and the ability to hang the vacuum near an outlet made charging convenient and easy, contributing to the overall practicality of this cordless vacuum.
    • Price, Value for Money, and Features - Despite Dyson's high price point often being a topic of debate, my detailed research and personal experience with the V11 convinced me of its value for money. Its excellent cleaning performance, ease of use, reliability, battery performance, and flexibility justify the investment. The additional features such as the convenient hanging charging station and the high-tech interface further add to the value proposition of the Dyson V11.

Cons of the Dyson V11 Outsize Cordless

    • Vulnerability to Moisture - During my testing, I found the Dyson V11 Outsize extremely sensitive to moisture. Following the device's displayed instructions, I rinsed the filter under the faucet. Despite ensuring the filter was dry before reinstalling, the vacuum abruptly stopped working.
    • Weight and Space Concerns - During my usage, I found the device noticeably heavy, leading to arm fatigue, particularly during prolonged use. In terms of storage, I was taken aback by the amount of space it required when wall-mounted, protruding 8-10" from the wall. Its inability to stand freely also posed a significant challenge in my testing.
    • Messy Disposal Process - Emptying the dust bin proved to be messy and dusty, a stark contrast to the clean and easy disposal processes of other models I've tried.

I've seen its predecessors, the C2 and Classic C1, do their thing, but the C3? It's on another level.

With its sleek redesign and superior filtration system, refined through user feedback, it’s a clear winner in boosting both cleaning efficiency and overall user satisfaction.

    • Allergy Sufferers - Thanks to its AirClean Sealed System and HEPA filter, it's especially beneficial for individuals seeking to reduce allergens in their home.

Who Should Avoid the Miele Complete C3 Canister?

    • Budget Shoppers - Given its premium features and performance, this model may not be the most cost-effective choice for those on a tight budget.
    • Compact Apartment Dwellers - Its size and heft might prove cumbersome in smaller spaces, making it less suitable for those in small apartments or studios.

Here are its pros, cons, and key specs you should know.

Pros of the Miele Complete C3 Canister

    • Suction Power & Cleaning Performance on Different Floor Types - My personal experience with the Miele C3 vacuum cleaner is nothing short of extraordinary. The vacuum's powerful 1200-watt Vortex Motor, which I personally tested across various surfaces, from carpets to hardwood floors, outperformed all my previous vacuums. Its 6-stage variable speed control is a feature I regularly utilize, adjusting the suction power to suit the specific cleaning task I am performing.
    • Filtration System Quality - The quality of the HEPA filter in the C3 truly impressed me. My tests demonstrated that it does an excellent job of trapping allergens and other microscopic particles, ensuring the exhaust air is clean and free from any common vacuum smells. Additionally, the vacuum incorporates a unique AirClean sealed system that captures over 99.9% of all lung-damaging particles.
    • Durability and Build Quality - The high-end build quality of the C3 stood out to me during my testing. Its durability is notable, and the design of the attachments is thoughtful, allowing for an easy switch between cleaning tasks. One feature I can't stress enough is the built-in storage for vacuum heads - this made it incredibly convenient to swap out attachments as I moved through my cleaning routine.
    • Weight and Portability - Weighing and maneuvering the C3 firsthand, I can attest to its lightweight design. The body glides smoothly across all surfaces, from hardwood to tile, and a protective bumper safeguards against any accidental furniture dings. The telescopic wand is designed for comfort and reduced strain, something I greatly appreciate during extended cleaning sessions.
    • Price and Value for Money - Despite a higher price point, my experience with the C3 convinced me it's a worthwhile investment. The superior performance, ease of maintenance, and long-term durability justify the cost. The effective HEPA filter system and built-in storage for vacuum heads add significant value to the package, ensuring that every dollar spent is worth it.

Cons of the Miele Complete C3 Canister

    • Motorized Brush-head Concerns - I noticed a concerning intermittent cutout of the motorized brush-head, seemingly a power short or disconnection during operation. This issue presented itself across multiple units I tested.
    • Dust Compartment Seal - A significant design flaw I identified is the misalignment of the vacuum bag within the canister, leading to a seal breakage. This resulted in dirt and dust accumulating within the compartment rather than the bag, a serious problem confirmed by my local Miele dealers.
    • Power Inconsistencies - In my usage, I experienced power fluctuations akin to a wiring short just after a few uses. I observed the same issue in several new units at the dealer's showroom.

Who Should Avoid the Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV356E?

    • Minimalists - Those looking for a more compact and lightweight model might find it a bit too bulky for their preference.
    • Hardwood Floor Owners - If the majority of your home is covered in delicate hardwood, other models may provide a gentler and more specialized cleaning approach.

Here are its pros, cons, and key specs you should know.

Pros of the Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV356E

    • Suction Power - My experience shows that the Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV356E outperforms many competitors in terms of suction power. I was thrilled to find it was digging deep into my carpet, removing dirt and debris that my previous vacuums missed. It even has an adjustable suction feature for when maneuverability becomes challenging.
    • Cleaning Performance on Different Floor Types - This vacuum excels on various surfaces. On medium pile carpets, it clearly left tracks, indicating deep cleaning. Its performance on hardwood floors, using the Dust Away attachment, was impressive, acting like a supercharged Swiffer. The attachment was efficient at picking up dust and fine debris that often escapes traditional vacuums.
    • Filtration System Quality - The Shark's filtration system is a significant highlight. Its multi-step filter setup, with pre and post-motor filters, including a HEPA filter, ensures cleaner air while vacuuming. From the first use, I noticed a difference; the air didn't smell like vacuuming but fresh and clean, which I see as a major plus for those with allergies.
    • Price and Value for Money - Considering its performance and the plethora of features, this vacuum offers excellent value for money. It may lack some aesthetic touches and ergonomic refinements of pricier models, but in terms of cleaning, it's hard to beat.
    • Weight and Portability - This Shark vacuum shines in terms of weight and portability. It's noticeably lighter than the Dyson, making it easy to use, particularly for those with petite builds or the elderly. The Lift-Away feature is brilliant, allowing the canister to detach for easier cleaning of stairs or hard-to-reach areas.

Cons of the Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV356E

    • Design & Performance Flaws - During my evaluation, I was disappointed with the vacuum's design. Tools were awkwardly placed, leading to constant displacement. The hose, with its U-shape, was notably inefficient, and the power brush tool was both excessively noisy and difficult to control. The cord placement was also poorly thought out, causing operational inconvenience. Additionally, I noticed that the toe-tap release was overly sensitive, which disrupted the cleaning process.
    • Inadequate Operation on Varied Surfaces - I found that this vacuum struggled on area rugs. Despite attempts at adjusting suction power, it remained unsatisfactory. The floor vacuuming accessory presented similar challenges - it demonstrated excessive suction and was rather difficult to maneuver on hard floors.
    • Subpar Durability & Build - During my test, I noticed the vacuum's plastic components lacked durability. A key issue was when the roll stopped spinning; upon attempting a repair, I discovered that the motor had failed - a serious concern regarding the product's reliability.

Our Expert Opinion of BISSELL 2999 MultiClean

The BISSELL 2999 MultiClean really caught my eye with its dynamite suction – it doesn't shy away from the toughest grime.

It's a jack-of-all-trades on any floor type, and its high-end filtration system leaves the air feeling springtime fresh, a real overachiever for its price.

Sure, it's got a bit of heft to it, but that's a small trade-off for its robust performance which truly gives you a bang for your buck.

In the vacuum showdown, it holds its own against the Dyson V11 Torque Drive with similar suction but at a wallet-friendlier price, zips past the Miele Complete C3 Marin in versatility, and even scoops the Shark Navigator in the filtration game.

The 2999 model is like the older siblings 2998 and 2997, but with a bit more muscle in suction and a ramped-up filtration game, making it a dream for anyone battling allergies.

Our Ratings of BISSELL 2999 MultiClean

    Suction Power 8.0
The BISSELL 2999 possesses a commendable suction power. Its multi-cyclonic suction system works efficiently on various surfaces, pulling out stubborn debris and pet hair with ease.
    Filtration System Quality 7.5
This model features a decent filtration system that can trap most small particles effectively, ensuring a cleaner exhaust.
Price & Value for Money 9.2
BISSELL 2999 MultiClean offers excellent value for money. Given its reasonable price, the vacuum provides an impressive set of features that contribute to efficient and effective cleaning.
    Durability & Build Quality 8.1
The build quality is solid, with durable components designed to stand up to regular use. The machine feels sturdy and well-constructed, contributing to its overall longevity.
    Weight & Portability 6.4
This BISSELL model is relatively lightweight, making it easy to maneuver during cleaning tasks.
    Cord vs Cordless 7.0
This vacuum is corded, which might limit its range of motion somewhat. Despite this, it offers an extended cord length which enables the user to vacuum larger areas without frequently changing outlets.

    • Budget-conscious Consumers - If you're seeking a balance between performance and cost, this vacuum offers solid features at a more affordable price.

Who Should Avoid the BISSELL 2999 MultiClean?

    • Heavy-Duty Users - For those who need a vacuum for intense and frequent cleaning, the BISSELL 2999 MultiClean's performance may not meet demanding needs.
    • High-Pile Carpet Owners - Without specialized features for deep carpet cleaning, this vacuum may not be the right fit for those with high-pile carpets or thick rugs.

Here are its pros, cons, and key specs you should know.

Pros of the BISSELL 2999 MultiClean

    • Suction Power - This vacuum shines with impressive suction capability, making quick work of cat fur and stubborn debris - a feature I found to be outstanding.
    • Cleaning Performance on Different Floor Types - It performed excellently on various surfaces, from high-quality rugs to laminate floors. Its smooth pivot design and adjustable roller brush ensure efficient cleaning across floor types.
    • Filtration System Quality - The filtration system is commendable. Regular cleaning keeps it in top shape, demonstrating an impressive ability to deal with high levels of dust and pet hair.
    • Price and Value for Money - For the price, I found the vacuum to provide exceptional value. Its impressive cleaning power and durability rival that of more expensive models, making it a great budget-friendly choice.
    • Weight and Portability - Though some might find it a bit heavy, I found its weight manageable and appreciated its excellent maneuverability. The long cord and easy-to-use hose add to its portability.

Cons of the BISSELL 2999 MultiClean

    • Hair Handling Troubles - Hair management proved problematic. Both pet and human hair frequently wound around the roller, necessitating manual removal which detracted from the overall ease of use.
    • Component Weakness - I noticed during testing that the components, particularly those for handling long hair, were fragile and prone to early failure, necessitating multiple replacements.
    • Design Limitations - I encountered certain design elements that felt outdated and unpractical. For instance, a felt buffer that would easily dislodge, causing roller brush immobilization and decreasing overall functionality.

    • Large Homeowners - Its spacious dustbin and long power cord make it suitable for extensive cleaning sessions in bigger homes without frequent interruptions.

Who Should Avoid the Kenmore Elite 31150?

    • Compact Living Spaces - Its size and weight may be cumbersome for small apartments or tight storage spaces.
    • Budget Shoppers - The Kenmore Elite 31150 is a high-end vacuum, and budget-conscious individuals may find it more expensive than other options that suit their needs.

Here are its pros, cons, and key specs you should know.

Pros of the Kenmore Elite 31150

    • Suction Power - This vacuum delivers strong suction, making it particularly effective for managing pet hair. The pet handi-mate accessory significantly enhances the vacuum's cleaning capabilities, despite the brush sometimes stopping on flexible cushions.
    • Cleaning Performance on Different Floor Types - I've found that this vacuum handles both carpet and hard floors very well. Its adjustable height settings and dirt sensor indicators ensure thorough cleaning on multiple surface types. The powerful brush improves cleaning efficiency, requiring only a pass or two to achieve great results.
    • Filtration System Quality - Vacuuming with this Kenmore model has significantly cut down on dander, reducing allergy symptoms in my household. This result implies a high-quality filtration system.
    • Durability and Build Quality - I've had this vacuum for over a year and it's still performing excellently. The detachable parts are durable and extend far out, making it easy to clean corners and vents. Despite its weight, the vacuum is solidly built and worth it for the cleaning power it offers.
    • Price and Value for Money - Considering the vacuum's performance, I found it to be great value for the price, especially for a pet-owning household. Its power, durability, and effective cleaning capabilities make it a worthwhile investment. Even after four months of usage, the vacuum operates without issues.

Cons of the Kenmore Elite 31150

    • Maneuverability and Design Flaws - I found the vacuum to be difficult to maneuver. It was too tall to clean under furniture effectively and too cumbersome for dusting, handling drapes, or cleaning stairs. Additionally, a design flaw caused the top part of the unit to permanently attach to the lower body, making it impossible to disassemble.
    • Weight and Ergonomics - While the vacuum had good suction and could fit under furniture, its weight and design made it difficult to use, especially on carpets. The placement of the motor in the upper part of the cleaner added to the difficulty, making it particularly hard for those with lower back issues to handle.
    • Noise and Hose Length - I was taken aback by the deafening noise produced by the vacuum's stair attachment. Additionally, the short hose length limited the number of stairs I could clean at once. The stair attachment needed to be assembled and disassembled each time, adding to the inconvenience.

    • Durable and Well-built - The solid plastic parts felt sturdy, and the vacuum stood up to my rigorous testing without showing any signs of wear. Stepping on the tube didn't result in any damage, an indicator of the vacuum's durable build.
    • Great Value for Money and Portability - This vacuum offered me great value for money with its light weight and high level of maneuverability. The long cord and its easy retraction mechanism, along with a suite of onboard tools, made it convenient to use.

Cons of the Sebo Airbelt D4

    • Maneuverability Issues - I found this vacuum challenging to steer due to its design. The four-wheel structure and the lack of a fully rotating hose greatly hindered its maneuverability.
    • Bulkiness and Weight - This vacuum's bulky and heavy construction made it difficult for me to handle. It's clear to me that it isn't ideal for environments with limited space.
    • Difficulty Cleaning Under Furniture - The power head design of this vacuum presented another problem—it wasn't low enough to effectively clean under many pieces of furniture. Moreover, the head was wider than that of other models I've tested, which compounded the issue.

Who Should Avoid the Hoover WindTunnel T-Series?

    • Lightweight and Compact Vacuum Seekers - The Hoover WindTunnel T-Series may not be the right option for those looking for a lightweight and easily maneuverable vacuum, as it is relatively bulky and may be challenging to carry up and down stairs.
    • Hardwood and Tile Floor Owners - While the Hoover WindTunnel T-Series performs well on carpets, it may not be the most efficient choice for hardwood or tile floors, as its powerful brushroll can scratch or damage delicate surfaces.

Here are its pros, cons, and key specs you should know.

Pros of the Hoover WindTunnel T-Series

    • Impressive Suction Power - My experience with this vacuum has shown that it has top-notch suction power. Whether it's pet hair, litter, or accidental debris like an iPod cable, this vacuum makes short work of it all. The strong suction often accomplishes the task in a single pass, making it highly efficient for cleaning tasks.
    • Effective Cleaning on Different Floor Types - I've used this vacuum on various types of floors, from rugs to hardwood to vinyl. With its 5 height settings, it adapted well to different floor heights. On carpets, it was particularly effective, removing not just superficial dust but also deeply embedded debris. The same effectiveness extended to bathroom rugs and entrance mats, leaving them spotless.
    • High Quality Filtration System - The HEPA filtration system is a definite plus. There is no dust smell during or after vacuuming, an issue I've faced with other models.
    • Solid Durability and Build Quality - Although I've only used the vacuum for a short while, it appears to be well-built. The assembly was straightforward and easy, which speaks to its good design. The materials feel robust, and the vacuum has already survived a few accidental knocks without any issue.
    • Great Price and Value for Money - This vacuum offers incredible value for the money. The performance it delivers is comparable to much more expensive models I've tested in the past, which makes it an excellent investment. Also, the fact that it's bagless results in considerable savings over time.

Cons of the Hoover WindTunnel T-Series

    • Unappealing Aesthetic and Disturbing Noise -During my experience with this vacuum, I found its overall design and color displeasing. Moreover, I noticed the disturbingly loud noise created by the constant operation of the beater brush, which could be especially bothersome in a quiet environment. The length of the hose was also a challenge, as it was too short for practical use.
    • Persistent Clogging Issues - During my testing, the vacuum demonstrated a high tendency to clog, primarily within the hose. When I tried to clear the clogs, I found the task difficult and frustrating. Moreover, I discovered that these clogging issues were not covered under the product's warranty.
    • Problems with Debris Spillage - One key issue I noticed was that the vacuum collected debris effectively while moving forward but dropped the same debris when I pulled it backward. This flaw created additional work for me, as I had to manually pick up the scattered piles after vacuuming.

    • Apartment Dwellers - Its compact and lightweight design is perfect for navigating small living spaces and storing in limited storage areas.

Who Should Avoid the Eureka Mighty Mite 3670M?

    • Carpet Owners - The Eureka Mighty Mite 3670M's performance on carpets is not as effective as other vacuum types, making it less suitable for deep carpet cleaning.
    • Large Homeowners - Its small dustbin capacity may require frequent emptying in larger homes, which could be inconvenient for those with extensive cleaning needs.

Here are its pros, cons, and key specs you should know.

Pros of the Eureka Mighty Mite 3670M

    • Impressive Suction Power - After testing this vacuum, I found the suction power to be excellent. It was efficient in picking up dirt, pet hair, and small debris, leaving the surfaces impeccably clean. The machine’s lever allowed control over the airflow, providing an option for back-and-forth vacuuming or straight suction. I was pleasantly surprised by the high-performance suction of this compact vacuum.
    • Exceptional Performance on Various Floor Types - I used this vacuum on several floor types, including laminate, rugs, carpeted stairs, and hardwood, and it performed remarkably well on all. The attachments were specifically designed for different surfaces, making this vacuum extremely versatile. Its wide and flat head was effective in cleaning and fit under low furniture, enabling me to reach hard-to-clean areas.
    • Quality Filtration System - The filtration system uses bags, which were easy to change and helped to keep the dust confined. The system successfully filtered the exhaust air, making the cleaning process healthier and more hygienic. This was particularly noticeable in my test, where the unit kept the collected dust well-contained, reducing the likelihood of allergens escaping back into the room.
    • Sturdy & Lightweight Design - Despite being incredibly lightweight, this vacuum had a sturdy build. Its compact and lightweight design made it easy to maneuver and carry around, which was particularly helpful when cleaning stairs or reaching high surfaces. Although the parts connect via friction and can disconnect under pressure, this feature seemed to protect the machine from damage, proving advantageous in the long run.
    • Great Value for Money - Given the vacuum’s superior performance and reasonable price, I found it to be an excellent value for money. Despite the lightweight and relatively cheap plastic construction, it proved to be a high-performing machine. With its strong suction power, versatility on various floor types, quality filtration system, and ease of use, this vacuum offers substantial value at an affordable price.

Cons of the Eureka Mighty Mite 3670M

    • Poor Build Quality - I noticed that the overall quality and durability of this vacuum cleaner leave a lot to be desired. It’s apparent that it lacks the robustness necessary for prolonged usage.
    • Design Flaws - My hands-on experience with this vacuum cleaner revealed substantial design issues. The attachments were difficult to secure in place, and the hose frequently refused to stay put, making cleaning a cumbersome task. Additionally, I found the process of wrapping up the cord awkward.
    • Decreased Brand Reliability - As someone who has been using this brand’s products for quite a while, I am disappointed with the diminishing product quality. This vacuum cleaner doesn’t hold up to the high standards set by the older models.

Other Vacuums for Allergies I Tested

In our rigorous testing process, we also gave the BISSELL 2998 MultiClean, the Electrolux EL4335B, and the Shark NV360 Navigator a spin, but these models didn't quite make it to our top picks for vacuums for allergies.

This is what they had to offer:

    BISSELL 2998 MultiClean

Having personally tested the BISSELL 2998 MultiClean, I can vouch for its sleek design and impressive functionality.

While it's a champ at picking up pet hair and boasts clever features like bright frontal lights, be cautious with its shorter hose and potential to heat up during prolonged use.

All in all, it's a solid, eco-friendly choice for diverse cleaning needs.

    Electrolux EL4335B

Having tested the Electrolux EL4335B, I can say it's a fantastic investment with its quiet, robust operation and impressive suction.

It boasts useful attachments and a longer cord that makes navigating rooms a breeze.

The only minor drawback is the hardwood attachment's noise level, but it's still a top-notch, highly recommendable vacuum.

    Shark NV360 Navigator

After giving the Shark NV360 Navigator a whirl, I was blown away by its stellar suction and effective carpet beaters.

It's lightweight and maneuverable, though you might want to watch its balance when storing – it's got a knack for tipping over.

Minor quirks aside, this vacuum is a game-changer in carpet cleaning!

What Vacuums for Allergies Should You Avoid?

In my testing, I'd suggest steering clear of the Dirt Devil Dynamite Plus and the Black+Decker AIRSWIVEL when shopping for vacuums for allergies.

    Here’s why:

    Dirt Devil Dynamite Plus

I've tested the Dirt Devil Dynamite Plus, and it's clear it falls short in a few areas.

The hose design is problematic - despite regular maintenance, dust doesn't quite make it into the collection compartment.

The vacuum also feels heavy and underperforms, extending the cleaning time on various surfaces, rather than making life easier.

    Black+Decker AIRSWIVEL

In my experience, the Black+Decker AIRSWIVEL just doesn't cut it.

It's pretty flimsy and struggles to adapt to different carpet types.

Plus, the dust cup design and lack of a beater brush off-switch make it less user-friendly than you'd want in a vacuum.
