First, What are Robotic Vacuums?

Robotic vacuum cleaners work similarly to conventional vacuum cleaning systems, but with a slight difference. They have artificial intelligence, meaning they can vacuum floors without a human controlling them by being programmed to map routes around your home and sense obstacles on the floor.

You may be surprised…

They do a similar task to the traditional vacuum systems, but one thing that makes them incredible is their strong performance. What’s more, they have more features than most vacuum system models. Many robot systems can find and settle in their docking stations when they have completed a set task, and there are also robotic cleaners that can notify you by ‘speaking’ to you when their cleaning is complete.

How Do They Work?

A robotic vacuum is a hands-free, battery charged unit specially engineered to find dirt and debris and suction it proficiently and independently. However, it works better on hardwood floors than on carpets.1

There are some robotic cleaners on the market now that have no issue working on almost all carpets, especially the thicker types, and they can make the transition from hardwood flooring to low-level carpeting with no hitches, though they can’t move well between the bare floors and plush or thick carpets.

Let me tell you something:

The latest types of robot cleaners not only clean your homes without assistance, but they can dredge up the layout of your apartment, particularly the one that needs cleaning, empty the collected debris and then find their way back for recharging or docking. Different robot cleaners can vary in their charging time, or in how long they can clean when entirely charged.

It’s true that…

Robotic vacuum cleaners have come a long way since their arrival on the cleaning scene and modern ones are far more “intelligent” than their predecessors.

Pet and Unit

These first vacs would have to be tracked down because they’d get stranded around your flat house once the power had been used up, while the modern versions can take themselves back to the docking station to recharge.

What You Need to Know

Robotic vacs are great in that they can be upgraded with new software for more effective cleaning programs, unlike the regular upright vacuum cleaners.

And that’s not the end of the story…

They have a motor to create powerful suction and rotating brushes2  to sweep the debris towards the suction, like your standard vacuum cleaners. Almost all robotic vacuum cleaners use two-drive wheels and one or more rapidly turning wheels to move them around.

They have an assortment of sensors which offer you feedback about the setting and which sense obstacles like stairs or furniture. These sensors will also track and record the distance travelled and the status of a machine’s electronics.

Upside Unit

Almost all robotic hoovers come with a docking station to charge their batteries between cleaning errands.

And there’s more to that…

The docking station casts a V-shaped light beam to a distance of about 6 feet that acts as a beacon to the vacuum system so that it returns to the station to have its batteries charged when they’re low and to dock there once its vacuuming is complete.

The vacuum will ignore the beam if it senses it during its cleaning duty and only respond to it once the work is done.

Keep in mind…

It would help if you placed the docking station in an open area that the vacuum can easily access. (Robotic vacuum cleaners that don’t come with a docking station can easily be connected to the power supply for charging manually.)

In Conclusion

Robot vacuum cleaners are exceptional when it comes to getting rid of the dirt and debris from your living room, but they don’t have peripheral vision, so there may be rare occasions where they don’t “see” the dust mites3 and debris it’s programmed to pick up. Read about The Importance of Vacuum Cleaners. With that said, there’s no doubt these clever little vacuums are one of your best options when it comes to hoovers.
